- Angela Houghton, "Houghtons," e-mail message from
(Chadwick Farm, Chadwick Lane, Knowle, Solihull, B93 0AS.) to Nick Morris, I
was so excited to hear from you. I have so many questions to ask you and
so much info to share.
Sadly I do not have Family Tree Maker but a friend of mine does and I have
forwarded your e-mail to her for my benefit. Maybe I should put it on my
Christmas List! I have been researching my family tree for about 6 years
now.
Out of courtesy a little info about me. I was born Helen Angela Houghton on
26th March 1967 in Solihull. I have always been called by my second name,
my parents choice. I am married to Jon and we have three sons, Ben (11),
Thomas (8) and Samuel (5). You have my sympathy - Ben did not sleep for the
first year of his live and still needs very little sleep now.
My parents divorced when I was 5 years old and my father remarried and had
four more children - James (26), Philip (24) and twins Christopher and Emma
(22). My father Anthony John Houghton was born in Handsworth 26/9/1939 and
passed away 3 years ago having lived nearly all his live in the
Edgbaston/Harborne area. His father Jack lived in Birmingham all his life
and was son of Charles John James Houghton. Charles John James' father was
James Edward who was born in Redditch and is listed as a Needle finisher and
a licensed Victualler. I suspect more of the Licensed Victualler as he died
of cirrhosis of the liver at the age of 36! He was the son of Charles
Henry.
I am interest to know if Jane or anyone in her family has any photos. Sadly
because of a family feud at the time of my Grandfathers birth I have very
few. Does she have any of Thomas William or better still Thomas Hawkins or
even better still Thomas Hawkins plus his brothers?
Secondly I would be very interested to know if you know the cause of death
of Thomas Hawkins. His father James died of Senile Decay (aged 72), his
brother Charles Henry died of Senile degeneration (aged 63) and Caleb died
of cerebral softening (aged 61) - is there a theme here?
Thirdly - who is the Elizabeth mentioned as adopted by James Houghton. Was
Sarah Clark (James wife) married previously, so was Elizabeth her daughter
by a first marriage? How did you find this out?
James' occupation is listed as warehouseman. Warehouseman of what? Do you
have a copy of his will?
All my side of the family worked in the pub trade and funnily my brother,
Philip does to this day.
Do any of the family still live in Redditch?
Did you ever visit Headless Cross Cemetery? If so please tell me you made
monument records. All my family are buried there according to the
newspapers announcements but the cemetery has since been changed into a
garden and all the headstones moved to the edge. They are mostly broken or
so warn they are unreadable.
You mention the Parish of Ipsley - was this St Luke's Church? Why did my
family all go to Birmingham (St Philips or Edgbaston) to get married. Was
it to do with their faith?
Now what have I to offer you well I attach a typed copy of a witness
statement I found in Stratford Records Office. This is a witness statement
given by Charles Henry when he was 14 years old and relates to a fight he
saw in the White Hart, Redditch in which a man died. You may be interest to
know that his signature was beautifully written so he was obvious well
educated.
I also have quite a lot of information on Caleb and enjoyed a very
interesting visit to Feckenham where Caleb and his family lived.
Also I do know that Thomas Hawkins and Eliza had a second attempt at a
Hubert Hawkins between Ada and Thomas William but he only lived for a few
months. I cannot lay my hands on the exact date at this minute but will let
you have it. I found his burial recorded in the parish record of St Luke's
I so look forward to hearing from you. My address is:-

- , "Houghtons," e-mail to Nick Morris, I was so excited
to hear from you.
