- Andrew Simpson. It seems that the Rhynd family was in
Craigie much longer than previously thought. I found a very early reference to
them in the "Acts of the Lords of Council in Civil Cases", 1496-1501, page 309,
Fol. 149a - 194b. This is by far the earliest reference to the Rhynd family in
Leuchard Parish, even at this early dat in Craigie Farm, and it only survives
because of a dispute between two large landowners over the lands at Craigie -
Dame Marion Herys (Herries), wife of David Bruce of Clackmannan (she had previously
married to Sir David Stewart), and on the other part William Stewart of Rosyth,
dated 21st Jan. 1499. Marion's first husband, David, had been granted a wadset
(a grant of lands in security for a loan) of Craigie by William Stewart of Rosyth.
With David's death, Marion was attempting, along with her new husband, to get
as much from the creditoe Rosyth family. They laid claim to Craigie and brought
an action against Rosyth and his tenants he had granted Tacks to in the farm
- James of Rynd Elder (presumably then there was also a James Rynd younger there,
his son?), William Rynd, David Swynton and Michael Walker. Marion wanted to have
them evicted. [Note that at this date James is referred to as James of rynd -
it is possible that the family had only just come to Craigie from their ancestral
home of Rhynd farm, next door - hence the "of" and the fact that the Rynds seem
to have been brought in by the Stewarts of Rosyth to Craigie.]
However, the Rynds were lucky. Although they themselves did not appear in Edinburgh,
their cause was represented by Stewart of rosyth. The complainer was told that
she had "na richt" to Craigie because her husband had only the Wadset, not the
Feu, of the lands, and presumably the Wadset had died with him. James Rynd was
cleared of all wrongdoing - he did "na wrong in the occupation of the saidis
landis of Craigyis."
It is absolutely remarkable (and a sheer fluke) that we have a reference to a
family who were essentially peasants (albeit very wealthy peasants) at such an
early date. When one looks at the available information it seems likely that
James of Rhynd the Elder was born about 1440 - 1450 (definately sometime during
the reign of James II, who bought Mons Meg to Scotland). As I sa, he may have
been the first Rhynd in Craigie - but really this is far too speculative to have
any degree of certainty about it. What we do know is that he is the earliest
definate Rhynd in Leuchars Parish on record.
As well as this, I was wrong in saying that the Rhynds left {Craigie} about 1595.
I found in the Scottish Register of Deeds, a very late reference to the Rhynds
in Craigie - to the last rhynd in Craigie, Patrick, who I found in 1694 on the
Hearth Tax.

- Andrew Simpson. Hi Nick,
Thanks very much for your reply. Sorry I didn't explain about John Rhynd and
Jean Elder - I found them as the parents of the first recorded family of Rhynds
in Leuchars Parish on the OPRs. While the records do not mention that they had
a son Arthur, they were alive in the 1660s and, if one thinks on the approximate
date of Arthur Rhynd's first marriage to Agnes Lowdon (about 1694 according to
the IGI), it is not unreasonable to assume that he was born in about 1660. As
you know, Leuchars records start in 1665. John Rhynd and Jean Elder had a daughter,
Jean, I think her name was, (working from memory here) born in 1667. They had
two other daughter as well, recorded in 1672 and, (I think) 1675. Now, if our
Arthur had been born before the records began (seems pretty likely given all
the evidence) and if he was born in Leuchars (again seems pretty likely due to
the fact that the family was clearly well integrated into the Leuchars community
and, as we have established, well respected AND because there have been Rhynds
in the parish for so long) the only candidates for his parents, from the records,
have to be John Rhynd and Jean Elder. If Arthur was a son of theirs born about
1663, Patrick could have been born just a few years earlier. It's a shame he
was born before the records begin, but I think because this was the only Rhynd
family in the area at that time then it is most likely that he belonged to it.
Naturally I'm always looking, of course, for evidence which might contradict
this theory, but I have found none so far, and so feel relatively safe in pursuing
the idea.
It is certainly possible that Patrick Rhynd could have been the same as the one
who married Isobel Kennedy - I think we should investigate this further.
Thanks for the other information on the Bruces of Earlshall. These families did
often change allegiance back and forward like that - take the Earls Marishall,
for example. The seventh Earl was a staunch Covenanter; his grandson, the ninth
Earl, was a staunch Episcopalian. Thanks as well for the GEDCOM - it was certainly
very helpful in building up the overall picutre of the generations of the family.
By the way, if you are interested, the Rhynd graves at Leuchars are lying by
the wall immediately opposite to the old bell tower and Norman Chancel and Apse.
Three, including the "AR", the "MR" and the stone of my James Rhynd (husband
of Barbara Scott) are propped up against the wall there. Close by is that of
James Rhynd, husband of Isabel Grieve.
Another nationalist! The descendents of Arthur Rhynd have much in common....!
Thanks again and I'll get back to you soon,
Andrew Simpson.

- Milne Roberts, "," e-mail message from
() to Nick Morris, 13 Dec 2005. Helen Turbayne was the eldest daughter of Alexander
Turbayne and Euphame Wilkie and was christened at Kilconquhar, Fife on 6th Nov
1774. Kilconquhar ( pronounced Kinnucker, yes we have them as well) is on the
south coast of Fife between the towns of Leven and Kirkcaldy and it will only
show on a detailed map. She married David Robertson on 28th Nov probably at Kilmany,
Fife which was probably her home at the time and he lived at Leuchars which is
only about 2/3 miles away from Kilmany. These places are in what we know today
as North Fife and are near to the well known golfing town of St Andrews. David
was a tailor and died on 12th Oct 1853 and Helen died on 20th Dec 1825. Their
children who were all born at Leuchars were :-1) Euphemia b 15th Oct 1802 and
died 12th Feb 1818 at the age of 15 years.2) David b 24th Nov 1804 and died 18th
Jan 1870. He was also a tailor and the notes say that the family were bankrupt
in 1852 but manged to keep the business going.3) Agnes Cairncross b 29th Aug
1806 and died 28th July 1817 aged 11years.4) Christian b 8th Sept 1809 and died
14th July 1819 aged 9 years.5) Margaret b 27th Dec 1812.6) John b 3rd Oct 1816
died 17th Sept 1817 aged 1 yearThat is 6 children in 14 years but I think there
would have been many more, remember there was no pill in those days. Helen died
at the relatively young age of 51 years as did many woman and it was from the
sheer exhaustion of many childbirths.

- Ibid., Left Leuchars when he was young, following a major
dispute over his fathers will when old Arthur died in December 1900. He worked
for some time in edinburgh, and then, when war broke out, his career in the city
was cut short. Soon after he married my great grandmother, Isabel MacFarlane,
and their son, my grandfather, Arthur Rhynd Simpson, was born in 1917 in Edinburgh.
But determined to return to the village, Thomas took his family back after the
war and worked as a quantity surveyor. He bought one of the weavers cottages
in the village, and there his other children were born - John, Tony, Ella and
Stewart. Following his mothers death in the 1930s he sold off much of his father's
former holdings in the village and was left only with his own cottage. My grandfather
left for British Guyana in 1938, to become a sugar planter (what possessed him
to do this remains a family mystery to this day) and then when war broke out
he joined up with the Canadian Air Force. Having found out the hard way that
a sight defect meant that he could not land planes properly, he was transferred
to radar.
His brothers were not so lucky. Tony was killed in the early months of the war,
and John in the invasions after D-Day. After the war, Stewart left Leuchars,
Ella went to America and my grandfather, following graduation from St Andrews,
became a French teacher and moved to Dundee. When Thomas died in 1968, and his
three surviving children sold his cottage (Isabel MacFarlane being dead by this
time), the family's long tie with the village was concluded.
